Did the devil really make you do it?

I sometimes find myself frustrated when people site “the devil” for their struggles or for their problems. People seem far more interested and afraid of the devil than of God. While I don’t at all discount the notion that there is a source to evil in this world, I do question the notion that the source of evil is engaged in every single thing in life that may not go our way. The idea that there is a little guy dressed in red with horns and a pitchfork running around impacting our lives is simply infantile. People feel like they are being persecuted by the devil, but in reality, we don’t need the devil to help as we are doing a pretty good job destroying ourselves. The devil then becomes a figure on which we can blame our own shortcomings…a scapegoat if you will to keep people from taking responsibility for their actions. Again, I do not at all want to negate that there is a source of all evil in this world, but I do want to suggest that 9 times out of 10, our struggles are caused by our decisions. So, the next time you find yourself saying: “The devil is persecuting me today.” Stop and take a realistic inventory and ask yourself if that is really the case or if your circumstances are caused by your own decisions and actions…or, if I may suggest a really challenging theory…that God is giving you an opportunity for growth through a difficult situation. Just some food for thought.-
